Lumbar Fusion or Lumbar Arthrodesis

A lumbar fusion is a surgical operation in which two or more vertebrae, from the lumbar spine, are joined to immobilize the segment of the lumbar spine and prevent its degradation. It is an irreversible surgical treatment that eliminates movements between the problematic vertebrae, thereby eliminating pain caused by friction or nerve compression.

IMPROVE YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE

The fusion of the vertebrae of the lumbar spine is a medical procedure that seeks to relieve pain by eliminating movement and instability in the affected area, thus preventing inflammatory aggression and the progressive worsening of the problem. In degenerative conditions affecting the intervertebral discs, intervertebral joints, and ligaments, compromising the stability of the vertebrae, surgery may be indicated as a therapeutic approach to achieve segment fusion.

IS LUMBAR FUSION THE IDEAL SOLUTION FOR YOU?

Lumbar fusion is indicated for patients with persistent and intense pain that tends to be chronic. The pain occurs due to degenerations of the intervertebral discs, spondylolisthesis, or spinal deformity (for example, scoliosis due to the decrease in disc thickness), and also after other less invasive spine surgeries that, despite having removed the cause of the pain, left the spine unstable.

THE TECHNIQUE AND SURGICAL METHOD

The surgery can be performed through anterior, posterior, or lateral approaches, depending on the clinical judgment and needs of each patient. The technique involves the insertion of bone grafts between the vertebrae and often the placement of plates or screws to facilitate fixation and ensure complete fusion.

If the surgery is performed via an anterior approach, after the implant is placed, the intestines return to their natural position with the simple removal of the retractors. The only element cut during the entire procedure is the abdominal muscle sheath, which will be sutured at the end of the surgery.

POST-OPERATIVE AND RECOVERY

After surgery, the patient may need to wear an orthopedic brace and will require physical therapy to optimize recovery. Total recovery time varies but is often between 6 to 12 months, with regular follow-up to monitor bone fusion.

BENEFITS

The main benefits of a lumbar fusion surgery include prolonged pain relief, improved spinal stability, and a significant enhancement in quality of life. Lumbar fusion can offer an effective solution for those facing painful conditions of instability.
