Cervical Surgery

Cervical surgery is an operation performed at the neck level, mainly for the resolution of problems like disc herniation or spondylosis, with compression of the nerve roots or the cervical spinal cord itself.

IMPROVE YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE

The goal of cervical surgery is the decompression of the nerve roots, when there is pain radiating to the upper limb (radicular), or the cervical spinal cord itself (myelopathy) when there are pains or motor and sensory difficulties in the body. The surgery may also be performed to stabilize the cervical spine. The surgery may involve removing discs or fusing vertebrae to relieve pain and improve mobility.

IS CERVICAL SURGERY THE IDEAL SOLUTION FOR YOU?

Patients who are typically indicated for cervical surgery are those who have localized pain in the neck or radiating to the upper limbs and who usually have compressive lesions at the level of the joints, intervertebral discs, the cervical vertebrae themselves, or over the cervical nerve roots, or even the spinal cord itself. Therefore, the indication for surgery will depend on the location of the lesion.

THE TECHNIQUE AND SURGICAL METHOD

There are several techniques for treating causes of compression of the cervical nerve roots and the cervical spinal cord. We can perform discectomies, different cervical arthrodesis (fusion) techniques, either through an anterior or posterior approach, with the access to the lesion target always depending on its location.

POST-OPERATIVE AND RECOVERY

In the post-operative period, the patient may require a temporary foam cervical collar. The recovery time largely depends on the specific surgery performed. Usually, all patients are admitted 1 or 2 days before the surgery, have the surgery, and remain hospitalized for one more night or, eventually, two. Recovery involves rest and, depending on the procedure, physical therapy may be recommended to regain strength and mobility in the neck.
